Lecturer: JUDr. Mgr. Michal Urban, Ph.D., Faculty Coordinator for Innovation in Studies at the Faculty of Law, Charles University.

Registration Form: AI Intermediate: Effective Use of Artificial Intelligence in Teaching

This module will be held in English and it is designed for educators with intermediate to advanced experience with AI. The course is intended for university lecturers who want to effectively integrate artificial intelligence into their teaching and use it to prepare and deliver lessons. Participants will become familiar with practical tools such as chatbots (e.g., ChatGPT), translators (e.g., DeepL), selected MS Office features (Word, PowerPoint), and other tools and applications that can facilitate and enrich the teaching process.

The course is interactive – participants will have the opportunity to try out the various tools on their own devices and discuss the possibilities of their use in their teaching practice, including the ethical aspects of using AI. The course will also demonstrate specific ways to use each tool. It is recommended to bring your own laptop or tablet with internet access.

Registration: Planning a Scientific Career

We invite you to a workshop aimed at introducing early-career scientists to the formal and informal requirements associated with starting a scientific career. The goal is to clarify what to focus on at different stages of your career. This workshop is intended for PhD students and early-career academic and scientific staff.

Agenda:

The workshop will focus on reflecting on the formal and informal demands associated with a scientific career. The objective is to clarify the main aspects of evaluating scientific staff that need attention from the beginning of a scientific career and to strategically respond to them. This segment will include a presentation on current systems for evaluating scientific performance.

Additionally, the workshop will cover strategic planning of a scientific career in relation to evaluation systems. Participants will address model dilemmas associated with starting a scientific career – what to do, when, and how.

About the Lecturer:

Mgr. Kateřina Cidlinská, Ph.D. is a researcher in sociology, higher education, and gender studies. Her research topics include working conditions in academia, academic careers, exits from academic careers, intersectoral mobility, professional identities, and gender inequalities in science. She is the founder and former chair of the Czech Association of Doctoral Students (ČAD) and the former chair of the European Network of Mentoring Programs in Science (EUMENT-NET). She co-founded and coordinated a nationwide mentoring program for early-career scientists. Currently, she provides consultancy in personnel policies in science and professional development for early-career scientists. She also conducts workshops and seminars in this field.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, 9 April 2025, the International Office organized a meeting for the international community of the ��ɫֱ��, inviting international students, staff, and their families.

Colleagues from abroad learned about how and when Easter is celebrated in the Czech Republic, what traditions are associated with it, and even tried some of them with enthusiasm. We decorated Easter eggs with colored hot wax and were amazed at the skill and creativity of those who saw and tried the technique for the first time, including our youngest participant, aged five. Finally, we made Easter whips out of willow twigs.

The meeting was a great opportunity to learn about Czech Easter traditions and make new contacts and friendships. Everyone enjoyed meeting colleagues from other faculties and departments whom they would not otherwise meet and sharing their experiences in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

The International Office would like to thank everyone for an enjoyable afternoon and looks forward to future gatherings that will surely help our international colleagues feel at home at UPCE.

A Czech method for detecting pancreatic and two other types of cancer has received a patent in the United States of America. The method of scientists from the ��ɫֱ��, which can diagnose the disease from blood alone, is currently being clinically tested by Lipidica. Collaborating with 14 hospitals across the Czech Republic, the company calls for volunteers predisposed to the disease to help with the testing and gain information about their health.

Thanks to the US patent, this research has gained significant legal protection in one of the world's most important markets. Besides the United States, the unique method has patent protection in other countries, including European Union member states, Japan and Singapore. However, the granting of the US patent was not at all easy. The entire process, from application to grant, took almost five years. The text of the document itself is 75 pages long, describing the principles of the method for early detection of pancreatic cancer by analysing lipids in blood plasma. The patent also covers the diagnosis of kidney and breast cancer.

“I am thrilled that we have obtained the US patent, which opens up great opportunities for us in the future. If the clinical validation has good results within two years, we can expand our non-invasive test for pancreatic cancer outside the Czech Republic and Europe,” says Prof. Michal Holčapek from the Faculty of Chemical Technology, the ��ɫֱ��.

Lipidica is a spin-off company based in Pardubice, backed by FONS JK Group a.s. and the ��ɫֱ��. “The patent secures our intellectual property and increases our credibility with strategic partners, investors and regulatory authorities. Its acquisition confirms our solution’s originality and practical applicability and represents a key step towards its transfer into clinical practice and commercial use. We are currently focusing on conducting a clinical function study of the method, in which we are trying to reach as many participants as possible. “Obtaining the US patent significantly advances the potential use of screening tests. I believe the clinical study will confirm the validity of the method. Our University’s research could lead to the availability of a screening test for this insidious type of cancer from blood alone,” adds Prof. Libor Čapek, Rector of the ��ɫֱ��.

Journaling is often seen as a personal activity, but it can be a powerful tool for PhD students and early-career researchers to enhance their academic and professional development. This seminar will explore how journaling can support key aspects of the research journey by helping participants clarify their thoughts, track progress, generate new ideas, and improve science communication. Attendees will practice journal writing techniques and receive practical tips on how to integrate journaling into their routines to enhance productivity, develop problem-solving skills, manage stress, and navigate the challenges of academia more effectively.

The workshop will be held by PhDr. Jitka Hloušková, Ph.D., a coach and mentor, holder of the international EIA Practitioner accreditation, and a member of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council. She collaborates with the Academic Counseling Center at the ��ɫֱ��. She has long been active in the field of education and also engages in writing.

The workshop will be held in English. Course capacity is limited to 12 participants.
